Teacher academy
Seventeen select Emporia eighth-graders will attend a one-day “mini” version of the Kansas Future Teacher Academy on Thursday at Emporia State University’s Visser Hall.
The session will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. and will feature sessions on goal-setting, technology and information pertinent to attending college.
USD 253 and KFTA faculty organized the one-day academy. The regular Kansas Future Teacher Academy is a week-long summer event for high school students. This year’s will be held at ESU from June 15-19. Applications for the summer academy are due March 14. For information, call 341-5764.

Death ruled homicide
GARDNER — A teenager is in custody in connection with the death of a 16-year-old boy in Johnson County after a fight.
Authorities say Dakota DeRemus was found dead Monday afternoon near his home in Gardner. After an autopsy found that DeRemus had a heart problem, police ruled his death a homicide and took the other teen into custody.
