Martin D. Hinrichs of Emporia and Joe E. McIlvain of Madison have progressed to the next level of the National Merit Scholarship Program.
On Friday, principals and counselors at Emporia High School and Madison High School were notified that Hinrichs and McIlvain were named finalists for the scholarships.
Both will receive Certificates of Merit and continue in the National Merit selection process.
About 8,200 Merit Scholarship winners will be chosen from the group of 15,000 finalists.
The names will be released in April, May and July, according to a notification letter from the scholarship program.
The National Merit Scholarships are valued at approximately $2,500. An additional 4,600 scholarships are expected to be available from 200 colleges and universities that finance the awards to finalists who attend the sponsoring institution.
More than 1.4 million high school juniors nationwide entered the competition last year for the 2008 National Merit Program, according to an earlier news release from the program.
Both young men were notified in September that they had reached semifinalist level.
Hinrichs is the son of Edith and David Hinrichs.
McIlvain is the son of Ross and Karen McIlvain of Madison.
