Obama takes Democratic caucus

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

The line to get into the Democratic caucus Tuesday night stretches out the door of the Best Western motel and into the cold and sleet. More than 530 people showed up to express their preferences among the party’s candidates.

Sen. Barack Obama is the winner of the Democratic caucus held in Emporia this evening.

It was a big night for the caucus in Emporia as more than 500 Democrats from five counties filled the Best Western Motel to the brim with standing room only.Just before the start of the caucus, which was set to start at 7 p.m., a line of people waiting to register snaked outside the motel, where it had just begun sleeting. Inside it was wall to wall people. Some people sat in chairs while they waited. Many others were packed in near the walls or sitting on the floor. Compared to the last presidential caucus in Lyon County, which brought in 75 people from five counties, Tuesday night’s turnout of 533 people was huge. People were there from Chase, Marion, Greenwood, Morris and Lyon Counties. The people represented two districts.

“I was expecting 200 to 250 people,” Lyon County party Chairman Jerry Karr said. “This is a large turnout.”

Karr said there were many returning Democrats to this evening’s caucus but also many people seeking to change parties and new voters. Others that were there re-registered because they had moved into town.

“We just had a good turnout of Democrats,” he said.

Both Hillary and McCain would be worse than bush. If you ever voted for a bush, you owe your vote to Ron Paul. You people really need to do your homework.
