Backs Obama

Originally published 01:40 p.m., February 5, 2008

In a recent poll, a major national poll found that almost 80 percent of all citizens believe that America has “gotten pretty seriously off on the wrong track.” This is an astonishingly large margin even for a people who are constantly striving to improve what is already pretty good.

Our presidential campaigns reflect this mood. All candidates emphasize the change he or she would bring to governance and the White House. Kansans have an opportunity to help select the next Democratic Party nominee this Tuesday.

Who to support is no small thing to me. Even though I am, like most others, an insignificant fry in the huge fish bowl that is America, I realize that the person occupying the White House defines in many ways what our lives will be like in the future and these are crucial times in a dangerous, difficult world. Every vote is important.

I urge everyone to give consideration and support to Sen. Barack Obama for president. His vision for our country is one of fairness and justice. He acknowledges that to achieve this, all of us must contribute our time, energy, and thought. Enjoining our national ideals, he emphasizes health care, education, foreign policy and war and the more current problems of economy, international terrorism, nuclear proliferation and, perhaps most of all, poverty.

Here in Emporia, we have just suffered a major economic setback. Already, we were one of the lower average-earnings towns in Kansas. Now, many of our citizens are being laid off in a major corporate downsizing. We should be acutely aware of the core issues being addressed by Sen. Obama. This is serious stuff and we are at the center of the whirlwind of issues America must and will face. We should express ourselves.

The Democratic caucus is inclusive; all registered voters are welcomed. Please turn out; vote for your hopes.

Senator Obama offers the greatest hope we have at this time. Your support would be a vote for a better America.

Note: This is a letter to the editor.

Looks like 13 states to 9 in favor of Mr. Obama tonight. If the estimates are right, he finished about seven delegates ahead of Ms. Clinton for the night, which would narrow her lead to 371-306.

Should be an interesting race.

Has anyone seen all the controversy regarding Obama's church?

You might find this to be an interesting read:

http://mediamatters.org/items/2007020...

verify the info with his church's website:

http://www.tucc.org/about.htm

I was a little shocked to read about his church simply because it seemed like reverse racism. Take the opening paragraph on his church's "About Us" page and switch out the word "black" for "white" and then tell me that if someone did this, all h*ll wouldn't break loose? You could switch it out with any other term you want, but still seems rather separatist to me. Just food for thought.

Who wants a President that actually will change Amercia.
I DO!!! I am proud to say I do not care what his church is, I care who he is and what changes he can make. I you want to continue to go down hill. Continue to turn a blind eye and we will have war in our back yard and no country to call our own.

Also, another resource to use before making statements if validity is unknown is; www.factcheck.org.
They and snopes. com make it a point to research the information before stating something that may not be truthful.

I would love to see Kansas vote Democratic for a change. Many people who I've talked to vote Republican and just do it because their parents did. They don't pay attention to what is going on in the country and don't realize what is at stake. A lot of them don't read papers or watch news on tv. They are ignorant enough to believe Obama is a muslim without checking it out. Someone started a rumor and it just spread. We that can and do read and pay attention to the world around us need to talk with straight facts to these uninformed people. Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck and Bill Oreilly can tell all the lies they want and people will believe them without checking. Ordinary people like us need to counter them when ever we can.

Thank you very much for your posting, Roger.

Getting information which is true has always been a chore. In the past, many people lived in places where it was virtually impossible. Today, we are fortunate enough to have hundreds of news sources at hand and at little cost. Double-checking information is simple and fast and failing to do so is a moral failure when it works to undermine an election of our leadership.

We are obligated to make sure of the information we make public is correct and to be willing to reexamine it when shown it is wrong.
