A Democratic candidate has emerged to run for the office of Lyon County Clerk in this summer’s primary elections.
Michael “Mike” Dorcey announced today that he intends to file by petition for the election.
“I have always been interested in politics, but only in recent years did I begin to get involved,” Dorcey said in a news release. “I decided to run for this office because I am interested in the political process and would like to serve the people of Lyon County as their county clerk.
“I believe that encouraging citizens to vote and protecting the validity of their vote are critical missions in defending and preserving our democracy.”
Dorcey has lived in Lyon County for almost five years and currently works for Kansas Radio, which operates “The Wave” radio station here.
He has worked as a reporter for the Manhattan Mercury, as editor and managing editor for three trade magazine companies, public information specialist at Kansas State University, public affairs specialist for the Kansas Army National Guard and community relations director for the Emporia school district.
Dorcey, a Vietnam veteran, completed a 47-week course in South Vietnamese at the Defense Language Institute. He retired from the Kansas Army National Guard with the rank of master sergeant.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Creighton University and has done graduate work in library science at Emporia State University. He is a member of the 2004 class of Leadership Emporia.
Since coming to Emporia, Dorcey and his wife Denise have been volunteers for several activities in the community, with primary emphasis on the Peter Pan Playground community-built project, the news release stated.
Dorcey and his wife have two children, Jack and Anne. They are members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
