Clark, Krause finish 2nd at Manhattan Invite

Monday, February 4, 2008

The Emporia High boys swimming and diving team picked up seven top-10 finishes at Saturday’s Manhattan Invitational to help the Spartans finish ninth out of 21 teams.

Aaron Clark and Derek Krause led the way for EHS, as both picked up a second-place finish on the day. Clark took second in the 50-yard freestyle while Krause finished as the runner-up in the diving competition.

Clark finished the 50 free in a time of 22.69 seconds, bettering his previous best time of 22.74. But touching the wall just .03 seconds before Clark was Wichita North’s Ben Martin.

Krause, one week after breaking the school record in the 11-dive competition, took second to Salina Central’s Louis Marcozzi, who scored a 351.50. Krause finished with a score of 334.55.

Clark also turned in a top-5 performance in his only other individual event on the day, placing fourth in the 100 freestyle in a time of 51.23 seconds. Sergio Segura placed 12th (54.34).

Segura finished tied for ninth in the 50 free in a time of 24.24 seconds, and Scott Peterson finished 10th in the diving competition with a 235.85, giving EHS two top-10 finishers in both events.

Emporia High’s other two top-10 finishes came in the relays. The 200 freestyle quartet of Segura, Dillon Suprian, Peterson and Clark placed fourth in a time of 1 minute, 36.70 seconds. The 400 free relay team of Segura, Suprian, Adam Coburn and Clark met the State-qualifying consideration time again this season by finishing ninth in a time of 3:42.04.

Coburn turned in a pair of individual top-15 finishes, placing 14th in the 500 free in a time of 5:52.18 and coming in 15th in the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:32.35. Sam Nolan turned in a 13th-place finish in the diving competition (230.00).

EHS as a team ended with 126 points. Salina Central won the meet with 283 points.

The Emporia High swimming and diving team travels back to Manhattan on Thursday and Friday for the Centennial League meet.
