Citizen helps nab runaways

A routine traffic stop for speeding, coupled with a telephone call from a suspicious citizen, led Emporia Police to arrest two teenaged girls in a vehicle stolen from a youth facility in Newton.

According to information from Sgt. David DeVries, police officer Larry Clay had stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 600 block of Neosho Street. Three teenaged girls were in the car, which soon was determined as stolen.

During the car stop, one teen got out of the vehicle, and the driver and the second passenger fled in the vehicle. The vehicle struck another that was parked in the 400 block of West Ninth Avenue. Both girls, who had been reported as runaways from the youth home, fled on foot.

“After over 45 minutes of searching, police dispatch received a report from a concerned citizen of two young females matching the runaways’ description knocking on a porch in the 800 block of Constitution,” DeVries said in a news release.

The suspects had left the area, but police found them a few minutes later in the 800 block of Merchant Street.

DeVries said the citizen who called in likely prevented additional crimes and also contributed to the safety of the girls, who were 14 and 15.

“Due to conversation with the third occupant prior to the car fleeing the car stop, the third female is believed to be a local teenager the girls contacted upon their arrival in Emporia,” DeVries said.

It's a sad state of affairs when kids from a youth center can steel a car, hit an unoccupied van, and walk away without responsibility for the damage that they have done. Everyone is trying to duck responsibility for this, when his van was just parked in his drive way.
