The Emporia State track and field teams took three championships and had three provisional qualifying times on Friday, as athletes competed at both the Pitt State Invitational and also the Frank Sevigne Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.
In Pittsburg, Alex Pyle won the men’s high jump, provisionally qualifying with a leap of 6 feet, 10.75 inches that ranks second in the nation. The mark puts him one centimeter in from of teammate Craig Saalfeld, who went 6 feet, 10.5 inches last weekend.
Damon Birk was a provisional qualifier in the shot put, taking second with a toss of 52 feet, 10.75 inches.
The only athlete that defeated Birk was Division II national shot put champion Tony Thompson.
Jennifer Robinson took first in the long jump (17 feet, 2 inches) and second in the high jump (5 feet, 3.75 inches) and triple jump (35 feet, 3 inches) to pace the ESU women.
Kathryn Davison took the other women’s championship, winning the 600-yard run (1:36.39).
In Lincoln, Kenton Lonberger had his second consecutive provisional qualifying time in the 60-meter dash.
He ran a 6.88 in the event, advancing to today’s finals.
Lonberger also advanced in the 200-meter dash and is one of only two Division-II athletes to make it to the finals of both events.
The Frank Sevigne Invitational will wrap up today in Lincoln.
