Emporia High School mathematics teacher Glenda Priest will be nominated for the Kansas Teacher of the Year award, according to an announcement from Nancy Horst, community relations director for the Emporia school district. She will represent the district as its secondary school candidate.
The announcement came Thursday afternoon during a faculty meeting at the school. Lori Linville, a teacher at Lowther South Intermediate School, was announced as the district’s elementary school teacher nominee at a faculty meeting early Thursday morning. A story on Linville was published in The Gazette on Thursday. Both were nominated by the Emporia National Education Association.
Priest also is the 2008 Emporia Master Teacher.
She has taught high school math since 1999, and has taught Algebra I in a two-year curriculum model.
“Many of her students begin the class below grade level and many are English Language Learners,” Horst said.
Priest holds a bachelor’s degree from Emporia State University, a master’s degree from Southern Illiniois University, and an English as a Second Language endorsement from Kansas State University in Manhattan.
Before she joined the EHS faculty, she had taught in both middle schools and high schools, as well as at community college and university levels.
The Kansas State Department of Education sponsors the Teacher of the Year program to recognize excellent teachers who serve as leaders in the profession statewide.
“All nominees become part of a network of educators who work together to improve their skills and advocate for public education in Kansas,” Horst said.
Finalists for the 2008 award will be announced in September. They will be chosen from each of the state’s four Congressional districts. The state award will be announced in November in Wichita.

Way to go, Glenda! She's awesome and gives all the kids equal time and care, unlike some in her department who favor the kids they used to coach in volleyball.
