Valentine show
The ESU Art Department presents the fourth annual Valentine Invitational Scholarship Fundraiser, “Love,” at 6 p.m. today at the Emporia Arts Council, 618 Mechanic St. The exhibition features work by several artists using the theme of love. The opening reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 14.
Bands set to play
• Lisa Moritz performs at 7 p.m. today at the Java Cat.
• Elexa and the Hitchhikers and GCDC perform, beginning at 10 p.m. today at Natasha’s.
• Jared “Pete” Gile at 10 p.m. today at Wheat State Grille.
• “Tiny Tuxedo” and Allison Olassa perform at 10 p.m. Saturday at Wheat State Grille.
• The Ususal Suspects” will play Saturday at the Noose .
• The “Co-Dependents,” a classic rock-classic country cover trio will perform from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Saturday at The Branding Iron in Olpe for the Mardi Gras party. There will be Fat Tuesday party favors and Cajun menu specials. Information: Mike at (620) 475-3838.
Valentine dinner
The Wagon Wheel will have a Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Special Dinner package on Feb. 14. The band starts at 7 p.m. For reservations, call Brenda at 343-2525. “Dead Idols,” “Take the Forgotten” and “Agathy” (rock and punk) perform, beginning at 9 p.m. Saturday, cost $3.
ESU exhibition
The ESU Senior Exhibition features artwork by Annie Ball in the Gilson Art Gallery at King Hall, opening at 5 p.m. Saturday. The exhibit will be shown through Feb. 8. Ball also will have an exhibit at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Inner Bean. Information: 341-5246.
ESU performances
• “Beowulf” will be performed at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Albert Taylor Hall on the ESU campus.
• The ESU Department of Music Honors Recital will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Heath Recital Hall of Beach Music Hall. On Feb. 8, there will be a Woodwind Day Concert (no admission charge) with guest artists Lynn Klock, saxophone and Gina Hart-Kemper, flute, at 4:30 p.m. in Albert Taylor Hall. General admission is $5; students and senior citizens, $4. Information: 341-5431.
Opera in Wichita
Italian tenor Marcello Giordani will star as Rodolfo in the performance of “La Boheme” at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Wichita Grand Opera, 225 W. Douglas in Wichita. Giordani is the leading tenor of the Metropolitan Opera and his appearance as Rodolfo is a “Wichita exclusive,” being his only scheduled performance of that role during the 2007-2008 season and his only staged performance outside the Metropolitan opera, said the press release.
