Shepherds’ Run’ brings treats to workers

Safety and health workers and others who will be on the job Christmas Eve are in line to receive tangible and tasty thank-yous tonight from members of Faith Lutheran Church.

It’s a project that church members call “Shepherds’ Run.”

Taking plates of cookies and specialty breads to workers who take care of the rest of the population every day, holidays included, has been a project of the church for a number of years.

“It’s just to share the love of Christ,” said Jan Haselhuhn, chairman of the church’s evangelism board.

“... (W)e want to share his love with others and to thank those who must be at their jobs for the safety and the well-being of others.

“They’re serving, and so we’d just like to say thank you.”

Members gathered at the church Tuesday morning to package the cookies and breads made and donated by volunteers. The plates will be delivered tonight after the Christmas Eve service.

“What we ask for, and what we normally get, is 29 dozen (cookies),” said Haselhuhn, who described herself as “just a cookie-maker, a plate put-together-er.”

The treats will go to workers at Newman Regional Health, nursing homes, the Emporia Police Department, both Emporia fire stations, the Lyon County Sheriff’s office, and employees of Emporia’s Radio Stations and The Wave 96.1.

That's a neat idea. I'll have to see if my church wants to do something like that next year. We collect food for the Salvation Army but could do more.
