Water main break

Monday, December 22, 2008

Water main break

Cold temperatures caused a 10-inch water main to break on the Emporia State University campus at about 4 p.m. Sunday.

The main, in the street between Cremer Hall and Butcher Education Center, led to a rush of water over streets, sidewalks and parking lots from the area of the break down to Welch Stadium. This water has led to the formation of ice over a large area of campus. Those areas were closed while city crews located and repaired the water main.

The break also meant that water in most campus buildings had to be turned off. The only buildings on campus that still had water after the break were the P.E. Building, the Student Recreation Center, Visser Hall, the Art Annex and Police and Safety.

Minority growth

WICHITA — Minorities now make up at least half the population in four of the state’s 18 largest cities, new Census numbers show.

The figures show that non-Hispanic whites are now a minority in Liberal, Dodge City and Kansas City, Kan. And in Garden City, at least 50 percent of the residents are minorities.

The figures, which come from the American Community Survey, were released this month by the U.S. Census Bureau. They offer the first look at the demographics of medium-size cities since the 2000 Census.

Sixteen of the 18 Kansas cities in the survey have become racially diverse since 2000, with the suburban communities of Derby, Olathe and Overland Park showing some of the fastest gains in minority population.
