One person was taken to Newman Regional Health this morning following an early morning house fire that destroyed a two-story apartment at 917 1/2 Mechanic St.
The fire was called in around 7 a.m. this morning, said Bill West, captain at the Emporia Fire Department. West said when fire crews arrived heavy flames were showing. The occupant of the apartment was transported to Newman Regional Health with non-life threatening injuries.
“The occupant had self-evacuated the residence prior to the fire department arrival,” West said. “Smoke inhalation and minor burns were sustained by the occupant. ...”
The fire was in control around 7:30 a.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation, West said.
The name of the occupant of the apartment wasn’t being released at press time. Fire investigators remain at the scene for investigation.
