Second-half surge lifts Olpe girls to win

Saturday, December 20, 2008

For the Olpe girls basketball team, the start to Friday night’s game was certainly not what the Eagles wanted. Though they shot 43 percent from the field in the first half, they struggled with turnovers throughout the first half allowing the Titans of Southern Coffey County to stay in the game. The Eagles rebounded in the second half to pull out a 60-42 victory.

“Honestly, I wasn’t that unhappy with the first half,” Olpe coach Jesse Nelson said. “We missed some shots that we should make, and we had a few missed defensive assignments. I really kept feeling like if we could hit our shots we could get back into it.”

They struggled early, turning the ball over four times in the first quarter and only scoring 10 points as they trailed 14-10 at the first break. In the second quarter they shot a little better from the field and won the turnover battle, but still came up on the short end of the scoreboard, trailing 28-27 at the half. For Olpe, it was a freshman getting the work done in the first half as Kendyl McDougald scored ten points and pulled down one rebound to pace her team. Kathryn Flott had trouble finding her shot from the field but added six points in the half.
