Police standoff ends
Emporia Police Department
Thursday, December 18, 2008
Emporia police officers were sent to 1300 block of Neosho at the request of SRS for a welfare check at approximately 10:33 a.m. Thursday.
At the same time officers were responding to that location, the resident informed a postal service mail carrier who was at the address for regular mail delivery that she was going inside the house to harm herself.
Officers set up a perimeter and avoided immediate contact with the resident to avoid escalating the situation. Telephone contact was attempted with the resident with no success. Police spotters could see the subject moving in the house.
Police negotiators were summoned to the scene and a communications link with the resident was established. The department’s special response team was also dispatched to the area to maintain the scene perimeter and prepare to respond if the situation escalated. Negotiations continued until approximately 4:45 p.m. when the subject agreed to meet officers outside the residence. The individual was transported to Newman Regional Hospital. The Emporia Fire and Rescue Department assisted as did the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.
There was not any threat to anyone in the neighborhood during the incident.
“Our officers did an outstanding job of managing the scene” said Chief Gary Smith. “Officers successfully managed the incident and exercised good judgment and patience to bring about a safe and successful conclusion” said Smith. The area was cleared by 5:15 p.m.

I don't know what this woman's situation is, maybe guilty maybe not,but I do know it can be traumatic to have the government(SRS) come to your house and harass.... I mean check on your well being. I'm not saying that the SRS shouldn't exist but it is too easily used by people with less than caring concerns. They paid a visit to my house one fine summer morn to investigate my parenting skills because a "concerned" citizen made a little call to them. What did they find wrong with me with their investigation? Not a single thing wrong. So I asked them if there would be an investigation to look into this false report that was obviously filed for personal reasons and not out of actual concerns and they said "no". What stops people from abusing the system? Nothing.
