Emporia is digging out this morning after overnight snowfall that has streets, sidewalks and lawns covered in snow.
Lyon County’s roads were completely snow packed this morning as motorists headed to work. According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, Lyon County roads are still snowpacked with ice.
A winter weather advisory will remain in effect for the area until 6 p.m. today.
More winter weather is expected by Wednesday evening with a 20 percent of freezing rain overnight and freezing rain is expected Thursday morning, changing to rain by Thursday afternoon, according to KTKA’s Web site.

Outsider:
I've got a solid 3 inches on the deck railings 6 miles north of Emporia. (I'm taking a vacation day, so haven't seen what's going on in Emporia.)
Only problem I've got here, is that we're still settling in to a new house... and the snow shovels are at the old one!

Goodness, Who would have thought that an article about the weather would have resulted in 5 posts being removed by staff. Chill!

1. brought up the smoking issue for some reason.
2. made a comment on that.
3 and 4. Desided 1 was using sarcasm that 2 didn't see.
5. Was me wishing I could afford to be a "snowbird" and move to Nevada for the winters. Not sure why that one was removed. Any of them for that matter. No one was fighting and calling names like on alot of the other forums.

I think it was cold last night... We had a cat that was frozen solid out in the road in front of the house. The guy down they said he measured 4inches over night and it was up to the cats underside when went drove by it. guess the cat was on 8 of its 9.

Any idea when they will start clearing side streets, 6th and 12th weren't bad, but it was really treacherous in between.

I was born and raised here and I can say I don't remember them ever doing side streets. (34 years give or take, LOL) They did the main drags and what they call "emergancy" routes. The rest are left to thaw on their own time.

Gwen-
I can sympathize. I have been taking a yardstick out all day. We have about 3" where I work. only 9" more to go.

I grew up in Wichita and they didn't do the side streets there either. It's just too expensive.

I believe Topeka is the same way. They have snow-routes that they do. I agree that its just to expensive for them. I remember as a kid my dad having the same complaints as we have now. I just leave a little early and drive slower to watch for idiots. The interstate and old 50 were horrible this morning. When I got to the edge of town I could tell they had atleast tryed.

Thanks, it would be nice though if the paper printed those "emergency streets," so those of us still fairly new to Emporia could plan out our routes. I had a route from my old place, but moved across town and now don't yet have my bearings in the snow.

DJrocksthemic, I bet ya make it home, the snow was only a few inches deep and every street I have seen today seemed to have had MANY car tracks up and down them.

The interstate in my 8-10 mile stretch had a 5car, jack knife semi and a couple other wrecks even 2 seperate wrecks AT my exit around 4pm today. The 5 car I missed by about 1 minute. One of the cars in it passed me (I was going 50) going I would say 65-70 yacking on the cell phone, about half a mile before he wound up in the median. All of which were still being worked by law inforcement. All said and done 11 vehicles. Be safe out there and slow down. God Bless
