Craig Woods made three 3-pointers in the first quarter on his way to a 30-point night, which led Hartford to a 57-50 win over Waverly on Friday.
“He’s a tremendous shooter,” coach Chuck Ewy said. “He worked hard in the paint tonight.”
Woods also closed out the game strong, scoring 13 in the final quarter, including a 4-for-4 showing from the free throw line.
While his numbers were impressive, coach Ewy took note of some other good performances.
“Tommy Smith did a great job in coming off the bench,” Ewy said, “and Colby Gardner worked hard to get his touches.”
Waverly had a more balanced attack, but came up short in the fourth quarter.

Southern Coffey County boys 66, Madison 50
Madison led early against Southern Coffey County, but the foul-prone Bulldogs gave up 27 points at the line and 44 points in the second half to drop their third game this season.
“When you put an opposing team up for 42 free throw attempts it’s awfully hard for us to play pressure defense like we like to do,” coach Alan Brown said. “They hit theirs and we didn’t hit ours.”
Technically the stat sheet said 43, but when the total is that alarmingly high, it’s likely safe to lose count.
SCC had a strong performance from Justin Meyer, who in addition to his six free throws also hit four 3-pointers, giving him a team-leading 18 points. The Titans made 27-of-43 from the line, compared to only 13-of-31 from the line for the Bulldogs.
“That was the difference in the ballgame,” Brown said.
Michael Luthi led Madison with 10 points and Caleb Hamilton added nine. Reece Childers, Henry Ott, and Wade Elwood all scored eight apiece.
“I’m really pleased with (Elwood’s) desire to improve,” Brown said. “It’s a matter of everyone else stepping up and doing their job.”

Northern Heights Boys 48, Herington 29
The Northern Heights boys faced an early deficit, but held on to rally and defeat Herington.
Derrek Swanson picked up a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds — nine coming on offense.
“Swanson really keyed our rebounding tonight,” coach Lanny Massey said.
Heights also had 14 steals to go with 36 rebounds. While the Wildcats struggled offensively in the second half, their defense held firm, allowing only nine points after halftime.
“Tonight we found a defensive personality that I really liked,” Massey said. “We got more and more stingy as the game went on. They rebounded well against a taller team. We were relentless on defense.”
Heights had a balanced attack on offense with five players scoring seven or more points.
“We didn’t shoot the ball well,” Massey said. “We let their height alter a lot of shots, but we distributed the ball well and spread the points evenly.”

What Olpe’s offense was missing on Tuesday, the Eagles must have found. Cole Krueger’s 10 points put them up to stay as they nearly doubled up Lebo, 65-35.
Olpe coach Chris Schmidt said that he was disappointed with his team offensively in Tuesday’s 45-44 win over Lyndon.
Krueger, Josh Klumpe and Bradley Argabright struggled against Lyndon, but they bounced back on Friday with Argabright scoring a game-high 20, followed by Krueger’s 18 and Klumpe added 10 points.

Laflin led the Lady Wolves with 13 points, Tastove added 12 and Schlesener scored 11.
After leading by only one after the first quarter, Brittney Hase and Laflin scored four points apiece during a 13-3 second quarter for Lebo, and the Eagles were never able to recover.

Chase County girls 57, Lyndon 38
Lyndon’s quick start didn’t hold up, as the Chase County girls rallied for 20 second quarter points on their way to a win.
The Tigers led after one quarter, but two 3-pointers from Aubrey Watts, en route to a team-high 20 points, gave Chase County a surge in their 20-point second.
“I’m very proud of the way the kids played tonight,” coach Gene Windle said. “The starters took care of the ball and finished a hard fought game by both teams. Coach (Frank) Hart has his kids playing hard.”
The Chase County defense also held tough, limiting Lyndon to 17 points in the second half, a fact Windle said was a group effort.
“We got an excellent defensive game tonight from the whole team,” Windle said.
Ashley Cahoone also assisted the Lady Bulldogs with two 3-pointers to go with her 14 overall points.

While Heights had three players score at least 12 points, coach Tim Riemann was more pleased with his team on defense.
“Defensively we did a real good job of being aggressive and forced a lot of turnovers,” Riemann said.
The Lady Wildcats had 16 steals and 43 rebounds.
“For the third game of the year, we looked pretty good,” Riemann said. “We did a good job pushing the ball up the court and converting some pretty easy baskets.”

Madison tried to climb back into the game with a third quarter rally, but SCC held the Lady Dawgs to five points in the closing quarter.
The Lady Titans had four players score eight or more points with Shelby Birk’s 13 leading the team. They also got a stellar contribution from freshman Ashton Gudenkauf, who scored 11.
“She came off the bench and played well,” True said. “She made three big threes for us.”
The Lady Titans’ offense sank seven 3-pointers, with Stout sinking the only one for Madison.
