Final

Olathe East 52, Emporia 48

Emporia kept it close until the end but lost to Olathe East 52-48 in the final of the Paul Terry Classic.

The Spartans were within 46-45 when Jacob Torres, fouled on a 3-pointer for the second time in the game, sank three free throws with 1:13 left. But Olathe East broke Emporia's press, and Jordan Banks scored under the basket and was fouled by Greg Canales with 1:01 remaining. The foul was Canales' fifth, and Banks made the free throw to make it 49-45.

With 8.1 seconds left and EHS trailing 50-47, Bryce Childs was fouled and went to the line for two shots. Childs missed the first but made the second, and Emporia fouled Danny Mundweiler with 3.8 seconds left. Mundweiler made both free throws at the other end to cinch the game.

Torres scored 23 points for Emporia, and Canales and Taylor Euler each had 10. For complete coverage of Saturday's game, please see Monday's Gazette.

The Spartans grabbed the lead for the first time in the second half when Greg Canales scored on a spin move layup and was fouled on the play. Canales made the free throw to give Emporia a 27-25 advantage, but Olathe East scored seven straight points after that.
