Neosho Rapids in running for funds
Saturday, December 13, 2008
Neosho Rapids Elementary School is in the top 10 of U.S. Cellular’s Calling All Communities campaign.
The program, which will award $100,000 to 10 schools, challenges towns from across the country to rally together to give the schools of their choice a chance to share $1 million.
“They each get $100,000 to use at their discretion,” said Marc Ballinger, store manager in this area.
People who want to nominate their schools for the contest may go to the Emporia U.S. Cellular store, 1402 Industrial Road, to get a postage-paid ballot to complete and to mail to the contest headquarters. The contest ends Jan. 15.
“They don’t have to be customers, they don’t have to sign up for service to vote,” Ballinger said. “We’re hoping they ask questions, but there is not a requirement to vote.”
Any U.S. public or private school serving kindergarten through grade 12 is eligible to participate. The 10 schools that get the most votes each will receive $100,000.
Currently, Neosho Rapids Elementary School is No. 9 on the leader board posted at uscellular.com/callingallcommunities. It was last updated Thursday.
U.S. Cellular is the nation’s sixth-largest wireless carrier, with more than 6.2 million customers across the country.
In 2008, the company has donated more than $4 million to non-profit organizations serving youths, families and senior citizens. Company employees have volunteered more than 8,000 hours.

With the economy and school budgets the way they are, this is wonderful news! Keep the votes coming!
