Arizings’ ovens are on

Although Arizings Coffee Shop closed in July, its owner, Joyce Hanlin, continues to ply her baking trade from home, operating as Arizings Bakery.

Hanlin, who plans to maintain her business year-round, is ready to bake cinnamon rolls, twists, muffins and cookies to order for customers who call 342-7378 to speak with her or leave a message. The deadline for placing holiday orders is Dec. 21.

Jewelry tips available

Emporia-area lia sophia adviser Monica Konrade is prepared to offer tips to women who want to add jewelry to their holiday outfits.

Her advice includes “taking a chance,” using jewelry to try out color trends rather than investing in clothing in a particular shade.

Information on holiday trends and the lia sophia line, which is sold through in-home demonstrations, is available from Konrade at mjkonrade@att.net or online at www.liasophia.com.

Cap Fed lauded

Although much recent economic news has been bleak, a Kansas financial institution earned praise this week.

A report on the financial network CNBC focused on Capital Federal Savings, describing it as having “followed high standards, even in good times,” which has positioned it well during the difficult months of recession. The institution made no subprime loans and lent money only to borrowers who were able to repay the money.

While large East Coast banks have suffered severe losses in stock value, the report said, Capital Federal’s stock prices have risen more than 40 percent so far this year and the institution has developed a sustainable business model that sets it apart from many other banks and savings and loans.

Capital Federal, headquartered in Topeka, has an office at Sixth Avenue and Commercial Street in downtown Emporia.
