MADISON — Madison coach Glen Stout got the sense that his girls were just kind of going through the motions on Monday against Flint Hills.
If Madison can win 68-16 just going through the motions, it could be a special year for the Lady Dawgs, who improved to 4-0.
Shelby Buster led Madison with 19 points and Morgan Stout added 17, both only playing three quarters.
Madison dominated Flinthills from the start, jumping out to a 20-4 lead in the first quarter using a pressing defense and halfcourt trap.
“It was working for us early on,” Stout said. “Our girls we started jump trapping and they did an excellent job of it and everybody did an excellent job of reading and going to the open girl. We played pretty good defense the whole game.”
Madison rarely let Flinthills get off a shot. When the Mustangs did get off a shot, they didn’t have much success. The Mustangs’ scored all five of their points in the second quarter from the free throw line, and managed only two Hope Harsh 3-pointers and a free throw in the second half.
The Lady Dawgs did not have one of their best games offensively, but it didn’t much matter.
“I just felt like we were a little bit sloppy pretty much the whole game, but it was hard to get motivated for them I think,” Stout said. “I thought they played solid defense but we just didn’t run our offense.”
Despite not running great offense, the Lady Dawgs managed to score 66 points in the first three quarter. They rested their starters much of the fourth quarter when there was a running clock.
Guards Malacie Bybee and Danielle Bond gave the Lady Dawgs a balanced inside-outside combination. Bybee scored eight points and Bond added seven — all coming in the third quarter.
