Show breaks with Tradition

Monday, December 8, 2008

The magic of Christmas is found in the memories we share of loved ones and holidays past.

That’s the message of a new holiday offering from Sherry’s Dance Workshop, which could become an addition to Emporians’ Christmas memories.

“The Christmas Attic” will be performed at 7 p.m. Saturday in Albert Taylor Hall. The new show replaces the group’s traditional offering of “The Nutcracker.”

“It’s a whole different level of Christmas,” said Sherry Davidson, owner of the dance studio.

The show features the music of the Trans Siberian Orchestra tied together by one young girl, portrayed by 9-year-old Maranda Scheller, who heads to her attic on Christmas Eve. She’s planning to wait up to see whether Santa Claus really arrives on her roof.

While she’s there, she begins looking through items that have been stored away like ornaments, toys and Christmas cards.

“It shows that all the things we have a related to our friends and family,’ Davidson explained.

The idea came from a poem the accompanied the Trans Siberian Orchestra’s holiday music CD, Davidson said.

The program is a series of vignettes danced after Scheller unearths an item and a narrator reads a poem about it. “The Christmas Attic” combines all styles of dance.

“You’re going to see ballet, tap and jazz,” Davidson said, sometimes in the same vignette.

It’s a highly technical show, too.

“Each one is a tiny little production,” she said, “with lighting, snow and fog.”

The show runs about an hour, Davidson said, and is appropriate for all ages. Admission is free, and, after the show, Santa Claus will be available to have pictures taken with children. Parents are welcome to bring their cameras for the photos.

The doors open at 6 p.m. for seating.

TSO's music is some of the best modern stuff for Christmas. I enjoy the heck out of it.
