Olpe girls blast West Elk, 79-24

Saturday, December 6, 2008

All was as it should be for Olpe on Friday, as the Olpe Lady Eagles unloaded 36 in the opening quarter on their way to a 79-24 victory over West Elk.

Two familiar faces led the charge, with sophomore Kathryn Flott scoring 27 points, followed closely by Katie Moyer and her 26. The two were key components of Olpe’s run to the postseason last year, and picked up where they left off, setting an example for their teammates.

“The kids approached it right,” coach Jesse Nelson said. “They really came out of the chute ready to play.”

Ready to play is right. They outscored West Elk by 33 in the opening quarter and never looked back.

Nelson said they didn’t necessarily feel comfortable with the lead, but looked to balance their attack.

“We also spread the ball around a lot. Several of [the girls] did good things,” Nelson said.

Three-pointers, especially from Moyer, provided much of the cushion, as she contributed eight.

Not to be overlooked, however, was the team’s outstanding defensive effort, as West Elk scored double digits in only one quarter.

“We had a good defensive team during most of the game,” Nelson said.

Northern Heights girls 43, Goessel 31

The Northern Heights girls turned a big third quarter into a win in their season debut against the Goessel Bluebirds on Friday night. Northern Heights had a six-point lead at the half, but the third made the difference for the Wildcats. Andrea Miller led Heights with 15 points.

“We started out slow, and you could tell we were a little bit nervous,” coach Tim Riemann said. “For the first game of the year, I thought we played well. Goessel was a good young team and tonight was a good test for us.”

Amy and Sarah Boline had eight and six points for Heights.

“I hope that this win will give us some confidence going into the Herington Tournament next week,” Riemann said.

West Franklin girls 44, Council Grove 25

A strong three quarters wasn’t enough for the Council Grove girls basketball team on Friday as they fell at home to West Franklin. The visiting Falcons were tied at the half, and up by two as the third quarter wound down, but they finished with a 20-3 run on Council Grove, making the score seem more lopsided than the game really was.

“They worked very hard,” Council Grove head basketball Jimmy Collins said. “[It] defensively paid off.”

The game was tied at the half and had the makings of a nail-biter until the end.

“They just didn’t do enough offensively and had some breakdowns defensively,” Collins said.

Darrah Miller led the Lady Braves in points with 12 and rebounds with 8.

Chase County girls 35, Peabody-Burns 33

The Chase County Lady Bulldogs pulled a victory out in their home opener, defeating Peabody-Burns. Ashley Cahoone led the scoring charge for CCHS with 12 points and added 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Heather Duncan and Sequoia Shull also were steady performers, tallying eight and seven points respectively.

The numbers reflected what the coach already knew: the victory was a team effort.

“The bench play was what won the game,” Chase County coach Gene Windle said. “We got good minutes from Duncan, Robin Grokett and Taylor Rains. We played a lot of kids tonight.”

Windle credited Peabody-Burns for its effort.

“Peabody played hard and pressed full- and half-court the whole game,” Windle said.

All of that pressure caused Chase County to turn the ball over 28 times.

“We need to get better for Tuesday and stop the turnovers,” Windle said.

A box score for this game was unavailable at press time.

Hartford girls 54, White City 32

The Hartford girls basketball team outscored White City in the first three quarters en route to their 54-32 victory at the Lebo Tournament. Kellie Farr and Paige Hamman each had 13 points for the Jaguars. Hartford distanced themselves early, with 7 first quarter points from Hamman helping them to a 15-3 lead. After that, the defense did the work and held White City at bay. A full box score was not available at press time.

Olpe boys 63, West Elk 37

One week after Olpe faltered in its chance to win a football championship, its boys basketball team got off on the right foot to make a run of its own, defeating West Elk 63-37. Seniors Cole Krueger and Josh Klumpe got into basketball shape quickly, leading the Eagles’ charge. Krueger had a double-double, with a team leading 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Klumpe added 13 points.

“[Krueger] is a tough kid to match up with,” Olpe head coach Chris Schmidt said.

The game was close early before Olpe’s defense stepped up in the second quarter and held West Elk to a mere 5 points.

“Our intensity on defense really stepped up,” Schmidt said. “It was pretty good for a first game, with only one week of practice.”

Schmidt was extremely pleased with the desire and intensity of his team, giving kudos to the efforts of nearly every player.

West Elk sank four 3-pointers, but that wasn’t enough to overcome the field goal shooting of Olpe. Bradley Argabright scored 11 and Derek Vaughn 9 for the Eagles.

Council Grove boys 41, West Franklin 27

The Council Grove boys defended their home court, winning over West Franklin on Friday. They held the Falcons to single digits in three quarters, and after the first, they pulled away for good. It was a strong first impression for head coach Bruce Hula.

“I thought our team played very well defensively,” Hula said. “Holding them to 27 points... and only two in the second quarter... we were playing hard.”

The Braves’ 13-2 run in the second quarter pushed West Franklin far enough behind that the game was in hand from then on.

Brock Frye led the Braves’ attack with 13 points, with Derek Ziegenhirt and Scott Bowles adding 11 and 9.

“Frye is a sophomore post who does a good job inside,” said Hula.

Defense also played a major role in the win.

“We forced, I think, 25 turnovers,” Hula said. “Bowles’ defensive effort tonight was exceptional.”

Goessel boys 57, Northern Heights 53

The Northern Heights boys fought hard and overcame a 14-point deficit only to fall short in their comeback quest on Friday at Goessel. Heights was down by 14 in the first half, and by 12 entering the fourth quarter, but rallied to take a 53-52 lead, only to watch it vanish in the final seconds.

“I am very proud of how our kids fought hard to get back in the game late and give us a chance,” coach Lanny Massey said. “They showed a lot of heart and with that kind of effort we will get better.”

Roman Murray led the Wildcats with 19 points, including five 3-pointers.

“Murray did a great job leading an inexperienced team tonight,” Massey said. “Goessel was a very good team.”

Heights used an 8-for-19 night from beyond the arc and 70-percent shooting from the free throw line to get back in the game.

“We were able to take a lead with a little over a minute left in the game, but made some critical mistakes in the last minute that cost us the game,” Massey said.

Teeino and Nick Tabares had a solid joint effort, as they scored 11 and 10 points.

“The Tabares brothers both had nice games for their first real varsity experience,” Massey said.
