Pats on the Back

Friday, December 5, 2008

EDITOR’S NOTE: Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. The following folks deserve a pat on the back ...

Emporia High School physical education teachers Sherry Nelson and Randy Wells who have received their National Board Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. They are among only six teachers in the Emporia Public Schools and 70,000 teachers nationwide to achieve this national certification.

• State Rep. Peggy Mast who was elected to a leadership position in the Kansas House of Representatives. Mast was chosen as the assistant majority leader.

• Emporia High wrestling teams who held a wrestling event to raise canned food for the Salvation Army. The Red Black dual had 42 wrestling matches and earned 350 cans and $50 cash donations for the Salvation Army.

• Organizers and participants of the Emporia Christmas parade. Parade marshals were Steve and Nina Haught.

• ESU’s Reading Recovery program that was ranked No.1 by the U.S. Department of Education as the best program in assisting students who need help learning to read.

How about a huge pat on the back for Larry Adams and his 35 years on the Emporia Police Department. He came to Emporia to go to college and become a physical education teacher but ended up on the police force and Emporia has been very blessed as a result of him.

I know Larry, I like Larry, I admire Larry.... but why only give Larry a huge pat on the back. The City LOST 200 years of service in one week, not to mention the others that jumped ship in the past year... like Michele Rodriguez, for example. Why are so many leaving? Could it be the leadership - particularly the COMMISSION & their history of POOR decisions, and their misguided priorities? They certainly don't give a rat's a$$ about the employees. Justthinkin !

To justthinkin...
Just because the City acknowledges an employee's milestone years of service does not mean that all of those employees are retiring at that time or quitting their service to the City. They did not just lose 200 years of service from anybody who just stopped serving them. Most of the employees who were honored with years of service awards are still employed by the City and are still going strong.

Congratulations to ALL of the service award recipients!!
I miss you guys and wish you well.
Signed, Kelly
PS...been there, done that... am grateful for my opportunity!

Kelly -
You missed the point - Chris Walker pats Larry on the back - which is fine & deserved - but I wonder why Larry is the only one of the seven retirees on the same day that deserve the recognition - the seven that are retiring represent 200 years.

And, yes, it is very nice that Mgt forces the Commission to recognize those with specific years of service on an annual basis. Believe me, the Commission doesn't seem to care if employees stay or go. I too, appreciate the loyalty of the employees, but I think it does need to be questioned why so many are leaving all at this time, and also why Mr. Walker thinks one is more deserving of a special pat on the back than any of the others? After all, the PD lost John Aufleger, the Fire Dept lost Cook & Sage (and earlier Noble), Sanitation lost Hinson, Administration lost Shipman, and Facilities lost Palmer..... each of these individuals served their employer well.

I don't think Mr. Walker singled out any of them if I read it correctly.
