Friday Thoughts

Friday, December 5, 2008

Friday Thoughts is a light-hearted commentary.

HONDA PAID A TOWN in California to cut grooves into its streets. When cars drove over the grooves they would play the theme song from the Lone Ranger. The singing streets were part of an ad campaign Honda was doing.

The holiday shopping season is in full swing, and Emporia businesses are wanting your dollars. As helpful shopping reminders, perhaps the city should cut grooves into Emporia streets with the “Shop Emporia First” radio jingle.

Hey Chris, Try driving down commercial st. south from 6th to the tracks. It sings to me everyday. The tune is "CITY IS BROKE CAN'T FIX POTHOLES.

Recently I bought one of those TV converters to use after the TV signal changes next year. I had the $40 card and had seen them advertised for $10 to $20 plus the card. Since several stores that sold them were chains I decided to go to a locally owned store to get mine thinking of keeping the business at home. When I inquired about the converter in the store I asked the price. He told me it was $30 plus the card as they did not have any of the lesser expensive ones but his were worth the extra money. I felt really gouged by the local merchant. I doubt I will ever darken his doors again. It is things like that that drive shoppers out of town. I should have declined to purchase it but I was in a hurry and paid the price. He may have made a few bucks from me this time but he won't ever again.

I've tried the local route in some big dollar purchases over the last couple years but when it came for warranty repair or some really obvious adjustments or problems, suddenly nobody calls me back and when I go back into the store to discuss the appliance and furniture issues, everybody gets real scarce. Apparently the service aspect is lost on shopping here first.

It's easy for Chris, he's the only business in town that doesn't have a competition.

So, everyone wants several big national chains here but they also want a lot of competition (I'm assuming between said chains)... You all realize that we live in a community of around 25,000 people, right?
