The Kansas Humanities Council awarded the Department of Social Sciences at Emporia State University a $5,387 Humanities Grant in support of The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Symposium. The event features presentations by prominent Lincoln scholars each Wednesday evening in February 2009. All programs take place at 7 p.m. at the recently renovated Granada Theater, 807 Commercial St. The events are free and open to the public. Brian Craig Miller, assistant professor of social sciences at ESU, is the project director.
“I created the event to celebrate Lincoln and his legacy in American history and memory,” said Miller. “The public will truly benefit from these enriching and informative evenings that celebrate the value and lessons of history, especially when it comes to Lincoln.”
Beyond the guest speakers, the symposium will include essay and coloring contests, book discussions at the Emporia Public Library, a night devoted to Lincoln at the Lyon County Historical Society and a dinner devoted to Lincoln for current and future teachers. The entire program can be viewed at www.emporia.edu/lincoln.
“Humanities grants support projects that connect people with ideas and engage audiences with the humanities,” said Julie Mulvihill, executive director of the Kansas Humanities Council. “The Lincoln Bicentennial is a wonderful opportunity for a discussion about Lincoln’s impact and legacy in 21st Century America.”
