The Emporia State baseball team announced the signing of three players, including Emporia native Cole Armitage, for the 2010 season.
Armitage and Spencer Blades will both join the Hornets from Barton County Community College. Armitage, a 6-foot-2 righthanded pitcher, went 5-2 last season at Barton with 32 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings pitched. He was a standout during his career at Emporia High, where he earned All-Centennial League first team honors twice.
Blades, a native of Liberty, Mo., went 3-4 for Barton as a freshman, starting six games and striking out 33.
“Both these pitchers could see time as weekend starters for us next season,” Emporia State head coach Bob Fornelli said. “We were really fortunate to sign them so early.”
The Hornets also signed Matthew Dahms, a 6-foot-1 catcher from Coffeyville Community College and a native of Kansas City, Mo. During his high school career at Oak Park in Kansas City, Dahms earned a first-team All-State selection during his junior year and all-conference honors during his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.
“We lost two catchers last season, and Matt will have a chance to compete for playing time,” Fornelli said.
