Carriage rides begin Thursday evening

Wednesday, December 3, 2008

Downtown Emporia will be filled with the sound of horse hooves on pavement Thursday evening as Emporia Main Street’s annual holiday carriage rides get underway. Saturday, Santa will make a stop at the Emporia Public Library for the annual Breakfast with Santa.

The carriage rides will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday and run to 8 p.m. Ticket sales will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Farmers Market kiosk in the parking lot at Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street. Tickets are $5.

The rides will be offered, weather permitting, each Thursday through Dec. 18.

“It’s a fun experience to get to ride a horse-drawn carriage downtown,” said Kayla Oney, Emporia Main Street executive director.

Breakfast with Santa will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Emporia Public Library, 110 E. Sixth Ave. The event is free and open to all school-age children and their parents. Santa will have two story times, Oney said.

“In between story times, he will take requests for Christmas wish lists,” Oney added.

Mrs. Claus also will be present and the Emporia Main Street elves. There will be many activities, including face-painting, zoo docents with animals to pet, Emporia Arts Council crafts and art activities and there will be doughnuts from Dolly Madison and juice. Major sponsors are the Emporia Public Library, Emporia Main Street and The Emporia Arts Council.

After 11 a.m., the fun doesn’t have to stop.

“Of course, stick around and get some good books,” Oney said. “We have lots of families that stick around and check out some books to read.”

the carriage ride was fun last year and the price not bad either But, a ride from 7th to 3rd st ain't much of a ride. they need to be a bit longer, it's kinda like a roller coaster ride, just when you start to enjoy it, it's over JMO
