Monday, December 1, 2008

Santa Claus waves to the crowd at the conclusion of last year’s Emporia Christmas Parade.

“Angels at Work” is the theme for Emporia’s 31st annual Christmas Parade, to be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The theme was chosen “to help recognize all the businesses and individuals who have gone that extra mile to help lead the way for a better, stronger Emporia,” according to a news release from the Christmas Parade Committee.

Activities will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a Christmas tree dedication and lighting ceremony in front of the CableOne office, 714 Commercial St. The ceremony will be performed by Mayor Bobbie Agler.

The parade will begin at 7 p.m. and will proceed up Commercial Street from Fourth Avenue to 12th Avenue. Tuesday’s weather is expected to be warmer than today’s, with a high near 60 degrees.

Emporia orthodontist Steve Haught and his wife, Nina, will be grand marshals for the parade. The two were chosen for their extensive involvement in community projects and their interest in helping others.

There are about 80 entries for this year’s parade, and as always, Santa Claus will make an appearance for the parade’s finale.
