The No. 11 Emporia State volleyball opened its season on Friday in dominating fashion.
The Hornets swept their first two opponents at the tournament in Omaha, Neb.
In the first game, ESU won 25-19, 25-20 and 25-14 against Rockhurst. Arica Shepard and Hannah Carter both had 11 kills. Carter’s 11 for 18 hitting accuracy was the second best in Hornets history when registering more than 15 attempts.
Megan Koster and Brianne Boner added seven kills apiece, and Ting Liu led the Hornets with 38 assists. Amy Byfield led the team with 16 digs against Rockhurst.
ESU finished the day with a 25-15, 25,15 and 25-17 sweep of the University of Mary. The Hornets held the Marauder to a measly .020 hitting percentage.
Koster led the team with 11 kids and seven digs. Boner followed with 10 kills and a team-high four blocks. Shepard had eight kills and ten digs, and Liu added another 35 assists.
The Hornets resume play today against Northern Michigan at 11:45 a.m. from Omaha.
