ESU wins opener, 42-0

Emporia State opened its season with a 42-0 victory over Western State on Saturday night at Welch Stadium.

The shutout was the first by ESU since a 24-0 win against Missouri Southern in 2000.

Andre Sloan El led the Hornets with 62 yards rushing and 185 yards passing, completing 14-of-17 passes.

6:05 left in the fourth quarter

KU transfer Brian Murphy returned a punt 82 yards untouched to give the Hornets a 42-0 lead. Murphy’s 82-yard return broke a school record.

11:01 left in the fourth quarter

ESU senior running back Seville Ko scored on a 33-yard touchdown run to give the Hornets a 35-0 lead. Emporia State went 62 yards in four plays on the scoring drive.

8:10 left in the third quarter

After stopping Western State on its opening drive of the second half, ESU scored three plays later on a 74-yard touchdown pass from Andre Sloan El to Dominic Mirocke. Sloan El faked the option, spun around and hit a wide-open Mirocke streaking down the middle of the field. The Hornets went 85 yards in three plays.

Halftime

The Hornets dominated every phase of the first half. They scored on three of their five drives and outgained Western State 274 to 66 yards.

ESU quarterback Andre Sloan El led the Hornets with 57 yards rushing and 59 yards passing, completing 9 of 11 passes. . Adrian Abner added 41 yards on nine carries. Junior linebacker Katrel Larkins led the defense with six tackles.

4:28 left in the second quarter

Redshirt freshman Zach Rampy took over at quarterback and the offense didn’t miss a beat. Rampy led the Hornets on a nine-play, 73-yard touchdown drive. Freshman Xavier Smith scored on a 21-yard reverse, the same play the Hornets scored their first touchdown on. ESU leads 21-0.

9:29 left in second quarter

After converting a fourth down to keep their drive alive, the Hornets scored on the next play on a 12-yard Andre Sloan El run. The Hornets lead 14-0 after a nine-play, 78-yard drive.

11:04 left in the first quarter, ESU leads 7-0

ESU senior receiver Sean Partridge gave Emporia State a 7-0 lead over Western State on a 29-yard touchdown run. Emporia State scored on its first drive, going 78 yards in nine plays. The Hornets finished the drive on a reverse to Partridge, who went untouched into the end zone.

I'm curious, where are all the Higgins haters? I know it's just one game, but you people are awfully quiet after a win, but pretty mouthy after a loss. Interesting. Good win Hornets!

I think I was sitting next to most of them. They were wearing red and were quite vocal for about...4 minutes.

Augustana is a D2 team that played in the NCC last year. The league that was considered as good or better than the MIAA before it disbanded after five teams moved up to D1

Way to go Boys! Way to go Coach! This was my first Hornet game. I have a nephew on the team. I thought they looked great. Looking forward to seeing the rest of his freshman season. I think they will surprise all this season! Go Hornets and go #27 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
