Spelling champs advance to State

Jean Miller and Laura Schlobohm were the first-place winners in the “Golden Senior” and “Over 50” categories of the Second Annual Lyon County Senior Spelling Bee held Aug. 23 at HIS Place Activity Center. Miller and Schlobohm will represent Lyon County at the state contest in Salina on Oct. 3.

The winning word was “baccalaureate.”

The second place winners were Richard Keeling from “Golden Senior” and Karen Whittlesey from “Over 50.”

Thirty seniors were registered for the bee. Fifteen persons who scored the highest in the written section participated in the oral part. They were Donna Breshears, Marita Bolson, Gloria Baxter, Schlobohm, Keeling, Lola Collinge, Dee Bosiljevac, Whittlesey, Miller, Teresa Mahoney, Thomas Lorenz, Kay Johnson, Jan Huston, Don Grant and Sally Conard.

Ten ESU students, “The Great Event” volunteers, helped with the event.

Judges were Carolyn Turney, Bernie Collins and Nishot Yasmin. Carol Strickland was the pronouncer.
