Acting class

A new class is being offered by the Emporia Arts Council called “I Wanna Be In A Play.”

For those 7 years or older, it’s a chance to be in a play. Everyone in the class will get a part. The two-hour class starts Sept. 6 and runs through Oct. 11. It meets from 1 to 3 p.m. each Saturday. The fee is $60.

This class is being taught by Penni Hansen and Susie LeGault who are the current directors of The Young Thespian Players. Space is limited. Call the Arts Council at 343-6473 or stop by the office at 618 Mechanic to enroll.  Book discussion

The Emporia Public Library book discussion series continues with “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the large meeting room at the library, 110 E. Sixth Ave. The book is described as an “incredible chronicle of 30 years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith and the salvation to be found in love.” Multiple copies of the book are available for checkout. Quilt show

A Quilt Show will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Strong City. Ranching Weekends, with programs given at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., also will be held Monday. Daily bus tours and backcountry day hiking take place starting Monday through Sept. 30. Prairie seed harvesting will be at 9 a.m. Thursday. For more information, call (620) 273-8494.

Stallions

The “World Famous” Lipizzaner Stallions will be in Emporia for the “Dancing White Stallions” show at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at the W.L. White auditorium. Regular admission tickets are $22.50 each; $20.50 for children 12 and under and seniors 60 and over. Tickets are available at the Emporia Area Chamber & Tickets.com. Art classes

Arts and Crafts classes at the Flint Hills Technical College include Knitting, Sept. 8-29; Beginning Jewelry: Bezels and Wirework, Sept. 24-Nov. 19; Basic Sewing Techniques (Sessions 1 and 2), Oct. 4 and Oct. 11; Introduction to Floral Design, Oct. 15.

ESU exhibits

An exhibition of prints from the personal collection of Wayne Kimball showcasing his talents as a master lithograph printer will be shown through September in the Norman R. Eppink Gallery in King Hall at ESU. For more information, call 341-5689 or see www.emporia.edu/art/.

ESU senior art student Jay Meara has an exhibition of his work, “Organ,” in the Gilson Memorial Gallery at ESU. The galleries are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. All exhibitions are open and free to the public.

EAC season package

The Emporia Arts Council opens the 2008-2009 season with The Golden Dragon Acrobats at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Emporia Granada Theatre. 2008 will mark the highlight of the Golden Dragons’ touring career with their 30th anniversary U.S. tour. Today, they are the premier acrobatic touring company, said the news release. The company “uses award-winning acrobatics, traditional dance and ancient and contemporary music to present a show of breathtaking skill and spellbinding beauty.” Other shows offered will be the Doug Talley Quartet on Nov. 5; “Nunsense” with Sally Struthers, Jan. 10, 2009; The Millers blues band, Jan. 30; Montana Repertory Theatre “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Feb. 28; classical harpist Emmanuel Ceysson, March 26; Mizzoula Children’s Theatre, “The Princess and the Pea,” April 3 and 4. Nominations wanted

The governor of Kansas and the Kansas Arts Commission are asking for nominations for the Kansas Governor’s Arts Awards. Those eligible include individuals living in Kansas with a Kansas address, organizations or institutions involved in arts and cultural activities and a city or county in Kansas. The deadline for nominations is Sept. 18, 2008.
