Sports injury clinic
Newman Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, 1301 W. 12th Ave., Suite 105, will host free clinics to examine any injury occurring during the upcoming sports season.
Beginning Sept. 6, the clinics will open every Saturday at 10 a.m. Athletes must arrive by 10:30 in order to be seen. Dr. Michael Yost will conduct the clinic. A screening by Yost will not carry a charge, but diagnostic tests such as radiology services will include a charge. If the examination reveals a problem, an appointment for the athlete will be scheduled for regular office hours at a later date.
Lady Spartan shooting clinic
The Lady Spartan Fall Basketball Shooting Clinic will be held on Sept. 20 and Sept. 27. Entry forms are being accepted through Sept. 15.
Girls in fifth grade through eighth grade will meet from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Girls in first grade through fourth grade will meet from 10:30 a.m. until noon. Entry forms can be picked up at Emporia High School and at other schools in the district. For more information, contact EHS girls basketball coach Bill Nienstedt at 341-2365.
Slo-pitch qualifier
USSSA and Fun Valley in Hutchinson will host a men’s slo-pitch fall qualifier on Sept. 20 and 21 for competitive and recreational teams. An entry will cost $150. Bike MS fundraiser
The annual Bike MS biking fundraiser will run through Topeka, Eskridge and Burlingame on Sept. 20 and 21. The ride is designed for bikers of all skill levels.
On Sept. 20, riders can pick one of three options: the traditional 88-mile route, the Century Loop route that measures 100 miles, or a lighter 60-mile route. The Sept. 21 rides include a 45-mile loop and a 60-mile loop. Catered meals will be provided, and frequent rest stops will be made and include food and water. In addition to riders, volunteers are also needed.
Registration costs $30. To sign up or volunteer, register online at www.msmidamerica.org. Each participant must raise at least $200 to benefit multiple sclerosis research and programs related to the disease.
Fall basketball league
Emporia High School boys basketball coach Rick Bloomquist’s Boys Basketball Fall League begins Oct. 1 and runs through the month of October. The league is designed for boys to improve their skills and have fun.
Emporia High staff and players will serve as coaches. Games will be held on Sunday afternoon and one weeknight each week. Participants are guaranteed 10 games. No practices will be held. Teams will have a maximum of eight players. Third-graders and younger will play with 8-foot goals.

Youth all-star team
The Satchel Paige All-Stars traveling baseball team is accepting registration for players ages 13 to 18 who would like to participate in the team’s Christmas baseball clinic and tournament in Bradenton, Fla., and/or be part of the 2009 summer travel team. The Christmas clinic and tournament will be held from Dec. 26 to Jan. 2 in Bradenton, spring training home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. If interested, contact coach Michael E.
