The Seventh Annual Great American Market on Sept. 6 promises shopping, food and several special events for an entire day of activities for the whole family.
The market opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 4 p.m. Kayla Oney, of Emporia Main Street, said there will be around 100 vendors this year with a variety of offerings. Among some of the vendors’ merchandise is collectibles, antiques, handmade jewelry and furniture.
“Lots of stuff!” Oney said. “Pretty much anything you can think of. Really the variety is phenomenal.”
The Emporia Arts Council Chalk Fest will be located in the 900 block of Commercial St. Spaces are sold in advance, Oney said, and the day is for people of all ages to come and chalk up the streets.
In the 1000 block of Commercial the Emporia Flatland Cruisers will have a car show. Awards will be given in more than 10 categories with open registration from 9 to 11 a.m. Judging will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with awards at 2 p.m.
The 1100 block of Commercial will host the Kansas Brothers of the Third Wheel Bike & Trike Show. Open registration begins at 7 a.m. with awards at 12:30 p.m.
Other activities include face painting, music and food.
Booths are still available for the market and should be reserved as soon as possible. To register for a booth, call 340-6430 or go e-mail at main.street@emporia-kansas.gov or on the Web at www.emporiamainstreet.com.
“It’s a whole day of fun, great buys and of course the merchants will be having lots of fall specials,” Oney said.
The Great American Market is a rain or shine event.

Did the planning committee of this or the Mexican Fiesta check dates ahead of time or did they deliberately schedule these events on the same weekend. It's a major conflict for those who sale at the market and the fiesta.
