Bluestem plans wildlife, conservation days

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Bluestem Farm and Ranch Supply’s sixth annual Wildlife Appreciation and Conservation Days is right around the corner and promises many events to tickle nearly everyone’s fancy.

The event will be Sept. 5 and 6 at Bluestem Farm and Ranch Supply, 2611 W. Highway 50. Bluestem has invited several local conservation groups, including Quail Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, National Wild Turkey Federation, Lyon County Soil Conservation, Kansas Hunter Education, Camp Alexander and Kansas Furharvesters.

“The groups come into the store and set up a booth and have a chance to meet our customers in a different venue than the usual banquets,” said Bruce Burenheide, of Bluestem. “We also have some manufacture reps here and have demos set up of hunting blinds, treestands and wildlife feeders.”

For hungry customers, there will be grill and smoker demos outside the store and a hot dog stand with Fanestil’s hot dogs and beef and beans. The proceeds from the stand are divided among the conservation groups.

Want to see how good a shot you are? You can do that too at Wildlife and Parks’ laser shooting booth where people can test their skills on games and targets.

Bluestem also will have drawings for prizes, with the grand prize of a Savage model 114 .270 rifle. For the kids, Grandpa Pokey will be on hand to make balloon animals.

“We try to make this a fun day for our customers and especially the kids,” Burenheide said “As always ... let’s get these kids off the couch and outdoors!”
