Scouting night

Thursday will be “Sign Up for Scouting Night” in Lyon and surrounding counties. Children are invited to attend the event in their area and learn about the Boy Scout and Girl Scouts and have an opportunity to enroll.

Times and locations for the events include:

• 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Admire Elementary School for Admire and Allen.

• 6:30 p.m. at Americus Elementary School.

• 5:30 p.m. at Kelley Hall and 6:30 p.m. at the Schuyler Museum Annex in Burlington.

• 6:30 p.m. at Chase County Elementary for Chase County area.

• 6:30 p.m. at Council Grove Elementary for Council Grove and Dwight area.

• 6:30 p.m. at Marshall Elementary in Eureka.

• 6:30 p.m. at Lebo High School Commons.

• 6:30 p.m. at LeRoy Public Library.

• 6:30 p.m. at Madison Elementary School for Madison and Hamilton.

• 6:30 p.m. at Neosho Rapids Elementary School.

• 6:30 p.m. at Olpe Elementary School.

• 6:30 p.m. at Reading Community Building.

Completes Army Guard basic

Army National Guard Sgt. Eric J. Gant of Council Grove has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, Gant studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills.

Gant is the son of Amy Gant and grandson of Carolyn Wilson, both of Council Grove. He graduated from Council Grove High School in 2001 and Emporia State University in 2005.

Air Guard graduate

Air National Guard Airman Matthew D. Tice of Osage City has graduated from basic Military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Durig the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and military customs and courtesies, performed drill and ceremony marches and received physical training, rifle markmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Tice, a 2006 graduate of Osage City High School, is the son of Jess and Lynn Tice of Osage City.

Places with essay

Kylie Haag, student at Olpe High School, received the $200 third place prize in the 2008 Citi scholastic essay writing contest. Haag’s essay was on a two-part question about “Using Financial Management to Achieve a Significant Goal.” As a bonus, Haag’s teacher also received a cash prize of $200 to be used towards classroom books and supplies.
