Walk raises a lot

Saturday’s Walk to Defeat ALS walk in Emporia turned out to be a record for the local event.

The walk, which raised money for the Keith Worthington Chapter of the ALS Association, had an estimated 250 walkers — more than any other walk, said Gary Ace, spokesperson for the local event.

“It was absolutely incredible,” Ace said. “We had both a record number of walkers and a record number of donations.”

The walk itself raised $14,400. A drawing for a quilt was held and that raised $7,071. This donation was matched by Ferrell Gas in Kansas City, bringing the total quilt donation to $14,142. The combined total was more than $28,000.

“That’s incredible,” Ace said. “I was a little concerned when I heard the thunder at 5 o’clock that morning, but it turned out to be a great day.”

The fundraising isn’t over yet. Ace is offering chances to win a George Brett autographed baseball. One chance to win is $1 or six for $5.

Tickets are available at Ace’s office, 1505 W. 12th Ave.

Twins die in closed car

TOPEKA — Investigators say twin 3-year-olds died after being left inside a car in northeastern Kansas for more than two hours.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the twins were found two hours after being reported missing on Sunday near Topeka. The children, a boy and a girl, were found inside the vehicle parked in the driveway of the home.

Shawnee County sheriff’s Sgt. Akim Reynolds says the boy was found in the front seat of the car. The girl was found in the back seat. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Reynolds says the doors to the car were unlocked.

The temperature was about 75 degrees. Reynolds says the temperature inside a car with its windows up could be 20 to 30 degrees warmer.

The mother was being questioned by detectives.
