Horses and cattle, cars, trains and brains will be part of the activities scheduled in Emporia this weekend.
Two rained-out events from the Lyon County Free Fair, the 4-H rodeo and the demolition derby, will be held at the fairgrounds.
The rodeo will be held tonight at 7 o’clock at the grandstand arena on the fairgrounds.
The derby will start at 3 p.m. Sunday, also at the grandstand arena. More than $1,800 in prize money will be awarded to winners at the demolition derby, according to sponsors.
People who are interested in possible passenger train service here may want to attend an informational meeting and discussion at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Emporia Public Library. State and local legislators have been invited to attend the meeting, which is open to the public.
Representatives of the Northern Flyer Alliance will discuss the next steps needed to include the project in the state’s 10-year transportation plan. Representatives also will talk about how to finance a rail stop in Emporia.
The second annual Senior Spelling Bee, for contestants 50 years and older, will start at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at HIS Place, 807 Constitution St.
Competitors will be separated into two categories, ages 50 to 75 and 76 to 105 years of age.
Winners will represent Lyon County in the Kansas Senior Spelling Bee in Salina on Oct. 3.
