The public will have an opportunity to hear about sedimentation issues at John Redmond Reservoir during a public tour and informational meeting on Thursday.
The meeting, which is being hosted by the Neosho Headwaters/John Redmond Reservoir Watershed Restoration & Protection Strategy (WRAPS), will be from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Shelter House No. 2 at the dam site park, John Redmond Reservoir. The meeting is open to the public.
Topics to be covered:
• Sedimentation issues at the reservoir — where it’s coming from, how fast it’s building up, where it’s filling in, how it’s impacting water supply storage and recreation at the reservoir.
• Eutrophication and other water quality problems at the lake.
• History and purpose of the reservoir and Corps management at the lake.
• Long-term water supply issues and potential impacts of drought on the reservoir and the Neosho River.
• Economic impacts/benefits at the reservoir.
The meeting also will include a tour of stream bank stabilization, riparian areas restoration and wetlands projects above the reservoir in the Flint Hills Wildlife Refuge.
Co-sponsors of the event are the Coffey County Extension, Coffey County Conservation District, Flint Hills RC&D, Lyon County Conservation District and the Lyon County Extension.
