EHS seniors maintain trend upward on ACT tests

Emporia High School seniors continued their trend of scoring above the national average on the national ACT test.
The school’s 2008 average composite score remained stable at 21.4 percent, while the national average composite score for 2008 graduates was 21.1, down from 21.2 last year.
The number of EHS seniors who took the test increased 17 percent.
Since 1980, EHS scores have experienced an upward trend. In 1980, the average composite score was 19.5. The score has not fallen below 20 since 2002.
The ACT consists of English, math, reading and science tests that are designed to measure the skills students need to succeed in first-year college coursework.
Average scores in the individual subject areas for the 2008 EHS graduating seniors was 20.2 in English, 21.6 in math, 21.8 in reading and 21.3 in science.
Kansas students continue to top the national average for composite scores on the ACT test. Kansas students had a composite score of 22.0, the highest recorded in the past 5 years and up from 21.9 last year. With 74 percent of the more than 32,000 seniors in Kansas taking the ACT, Kansas ranks in the top 20 percent in participation and the five-year trend data on Kansas students continues upward.
