Watts wins city championship

Monday, August 18, 2008

Dave Watts won the championship flight of the 37th annual Emporia City Championship on Sunday at Emporia Country Club.

Watts beat Fletcher Harder and Barry Muninger by three strokes with a two-day score of 137. Harder finished second by winning a one-hole playoff.

“I think it was the toughest city championship we’ve ever had,” Watts said. “There were five guys in there that could have won it. Both Fletcher and Barrry shot scores that would have won in the past easily. All those kids are tough.”

Watts is goal was to shoot in the 60s both days and he was able to do so, shooting an opening round 69 on Saturday at Emporia’s Municipal golf course and finishing with a 68 on Sunday at the Country Club.

“I was pretty comfortable all day,” Watts said. “My caddy (Charlie Mahon) was very calming. I was hitting it good all day. The drvier was straight and I never really got tight all day. I made a birdie on 17 and that took all the pressure off.”

Watts was also the city champion in 2006, but he did not play last year because he was playing in a friend’s tournament that weekend.

Bruce Schmid won the first flight with a 157, also winning by three strokes over Steve Neill, who was five strokes better than third-place finisher Glen Schmidt.

Jermy Hinkle won the second Flight, Bob Burenheide finished second and Jim Kessler finished third.
