An Aug. 21 district court hearing has been set for Hernan Hernandez, 11, one of the three boys accused of killing birds and committing acts of vandalism at the David Traylor Zoo of Emporia.

Development meeting
Property owners in northwest Emporia have confirmed they have been contacted about a meeting Thursday to discuss possible retail development on property at the northeast corner of West 24th Avenue and Industrial Road.
According to the letter, sent to some property-owners in that area, the meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the conference room at the Flint Hills Technical College.
The letter stated the discussion will center on a “proposed commercial development they intend to file with the city.”
A representative of the Kansas City, Mo., law firm that generated the letter said this morning that he had not yet been able to reach the client to gain authorization to talk with the press about the meeting.
