A black steer apparently caused a one-vehicle accident early this morning when the driver of a van struck the animal at Roads 290 and F.
The driver of the 1993 Ford Aerostar, Raphfel Oritiz, 32, said that he was driving north when a large black steer came onto the roadway, according to a press release from the Lyon County Sheriff’s office.
“Mr. Oritiz struck the steer, then went into the ditch, through the fence and came to a stop in the pasture,” Deputy Danny Broyles said in the release.
Oritiz and two passengers in the vehicle — Fransico Herrera, 50, and Pedro Martinez, 29 — were taken to Newman Regional Health for treatment.
Four others in the van — Marcos Murillo, 32, Eber Duarte-Perez, 28, Mario Moreno, 32, and Ender Rodriguez, 37 — were treated at the scene by emergency technicians from the Emporia/Lyon County Ambulance Service.
Two ambulances and one rescue vehicle responded to the scene, in addition to sheriff’s deputies and Americus First Responders.
