ABWA scholars

The Emporia Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association has awarded two $500 scholarships to area women, Anna Salas of Council Grove and Joanne Bock of Burlington.

Salas graduated in May from Council Grove High School with a 3.9. GPA. She has been active in several sports and organizations in high school while also helping her parents run a restaurant. She plans to attend Kansas State University in the fall and study business and Spanish. She eventually would like to own her own business.

Bock, who lives in Burlington and is the mother of six children, joined the Army serving for three years. She then attended Lansing Community College and then joined the Air Force for three years. After serving in the Air Force, she became a stay-at-home mother while she raised her family. She returned to school in 2001, attending Emporia State University and Allen County Community College while working several jobs. She studied nursing at Allen County CC and received her certified nurses aide degree. She is now studying for an associate’sand licensed practical nurse degrees at Fint Hills Technical College. She plans to graduate in December, with the goal of becoming a registered nurse with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Hospital volunteers

Four candy stripers at Newman Regional Health have received award pins for volunteer service to the hospital. Whitney Brooks received a pin for 200 hours of volunteer work. Ciara Currie, Marina Nevarez and Megan McRell received 25-hour pins.

Receives master’s

Sheena N. Walters of Emporia graduated from Missouri State University with a master’s degree and was recognized by the university Honors College for “work with a more rigorous curriculum,” said the news release. Walters received her degree during commencement ceremonies Aug. 1.
