Sertoma

The 2008-09 officers and board of directors of the Sertoma Club of Emporia are Bob Hush, president; Shaun Parks, president-elect; Mary Wade and Ron Dinkel, vice presidents; Ulli Wallace, secretary; Rod Symmonds, treasurer; Shaun Parks, sergeant-at-arms; chairman of the board, John Newland; and Aaron Bura, Elton Jensen, Kerry Wallace, Jim Stolfus, Perry Ott, Glenn Boyce, Warren Brown, Les Nuessen. At the July 9 meeting of the USD 253 school board, John Newland and Les Neussen presented a check for $3,054 to be used to purchase audiology equipment for the schools. Speakers during July were Richard Garber, president of the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce and manager of the Prairieland Partners John Deere dealership in Emporia; Wilma Malone, dietician at Newman Regional Health; and Judy Heasley, president of the ESU Foundation and executive director of University Advancement. Guests included Diane Jensen and Charisse Symmonnds.

Optimists

The newest member of the Flint Hills Optimist Club is city commissioner Kevin Nelson. It was announced the FHOC annual Pancake Feed will be held Oct. 11 at the TRYSA soccer fields and that some members will enter the barbecue competition during the Beef Fest this coming weekend. Speakers in July included dispatchers from the Emporia Police Department, Ken Bartles of L-Cat and Jenelle McCoy of Compeer. Reports were given by Joe Michaels about the Wish ‘n Spin wishing well and Bernie Toso about fireworks for 2009. Guests have included Adele Douglas, Deanna DurlerAlan Walker, Kelsey Fowler, Scott Abbott and Matthew Fowler.
