Make do, make better

Saturday, August 9, 2008

Maybe Phil Gramm was right (mostly for the wrong reasons)! Perhaps we do whine too much.

The question is not really the current mess into which we have been gotten by our “leaders,” but what are we to do about it? Were we too complacent and reliant upon those “leaders” from whom we expected great, saving graces? Should we just forget about them and then get ourselves out of the quagmires, the economy, the Mideast, energy and the like?

Get off the consumer merry-go-round! Buy things we need, not want. Walk or ride a bike whenever we can. Vote for candidates who’ll bring troops home from all over the world.

The upshot is that rather than whine, figure out how we can make a better life with less. Must we have everything our hearts desire or can we, folks from the prairies of Kansas, find happiness and fulfillment through a new (to us) lifestyle?

Al didn't hear you, Paul, because he was on his private jet headed to make another speech about how we shouldn't be flying on private jets. Or, he was in his mansion that uses more energy per week than average homes use in a year writing a speech about how average Americans are at fault for the energy crisis because we consume too much energy. Or, he was driving in his SUV en route to a television interview to say that average Americans are at fault for the oil crisis because we don't drive hybrids or ride bicycles. He wouldn't understand anyway.

"bring troops home from all over the world." Once all the troops are home what then? Where do we put them and their planes and ships? What do we do about having troops in strategic places? Sorry Doug, but this is part of our defense system. Did you happen to see how quickly the Georgian people were turned into refugees over the weekend?
