Burlington
The Coffey County Republican reported that Coffey County commissioners approved the emergency replacement of a Coffey County Sheriff’s patrol vehicle. Coffey County Sheriff Randy Rogers told commissioners a patrol vehicle had been damaged from an accident with a deer. Commissioners approved the request for an emergency purchase of a vehicle.
Madison
The Madison News reported that vandalism at the city pool forced the pool’s closure for the remainder of the season. Madison City Employee Bill Thompson reported to the city council that vandals broke into the pool’s pump house and vandalized the pumps. The council made the decision to buy new pumps but will wait for them to be installed for the season next summer. There are no suspects in the vandalism.
Burlington
The Coffey County Republican reported that record numbers of families relied on food from God’s Storehouse to make ends meet in July causing the food pantry to experience a food shortage. The economy has sent record numbers of people to the pantry for help. The pantry is in need of donations. Donations can be taken to the pantry between 9 a.m. and noon Monday-Friday or contact Pastor Haselhuhn at (620) 364-2283.
Chase County
The Chase County Leader-News reported that the mill levy in Chase County was set at 60.162 for 2009, which is .0848 mills higher than last year’s. Each mill taxed will collect a total of $39,760.22. Last year this number generated $40,847.14. A public budget hearing will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 18 at the temporary Chase County Courthouse in Cottonwood Falls.

Pool vandals cost cities and home owner neighborhoods millions of dollars every year - I hope that the pool managers in Madison can catch whoever damaged the pump house.
