Chamber welcomes dentists, sets Before Hours event

Emporians will have opportunities this month to meet two new dentists and learn more about a business in networking events sponsored by the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau.

A ribbon-cutting at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday will welcome two new dentists to the newly remodeled dental clinic at the Flint Hills Community Health Center, 420 W. 15th Ave.

Dr. Blair Edington and Dr. Michelle Perez are the new professional staff members at the clinic, under the direction of Lougene Marsh. Those attending are invited to share light refreshments and tour the dental clinic as part of the open house. Next week is National Health Center Week.

Information about the dental clinic is online at www.flinthillshealth.org or at 342-4864, ext. 275.

Through Aug. 26, the chamber is accepting reservations for a Business Before Hours event spotlighting KJIL 91.9 FM radio. The breakfast event is set for 7 to 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, in the board room at the chamber office, 719 Commercial St.

Reservations may be made by phone at 342-1600 or online at www.emporiakschamber.org. The cost is $5 for chamber members and their guests, $8 for non-members.

Service sector shrinks

NEW YORK — The U.S. service sector contracted in July — though less than expected — as new orders decreased and prices rose, stifling growth for truckers, retailers and insurers.

The Institute for Supply Management, a trade group of purchasing executives, said Tuesday its reading of the service sector was 49.5 in July, up from 48.2 in June. It beat economists’ prediction of a reading of 49.0, according to the consensus estimate of Wall Street economists surveyed by Thomson/IFR.
