New skills certificate available this fall

Friday, August 8, 2008

Flint Hills Technical College has developed a Manufacturing Skills Certificate for the fall 2008 semester.

“The certificate program is designed to develop student employability skills and create awareness of those traits that maximize the student’s potential. It is designed around adult learning concepts where knowledge is related to life experiences and where learning is hands on and work related where applicable,” said Steve Harmon, director of customized training.

The initial course offered is Applied Mathematics that is used as a vehicle to promote communication skills as well as numeric manipulation. Specific skills courses, Blueprint Reading, Precision Measurement, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerances form the MSC course backbone as basic learning in areas of manufacturing.

The final courses are Occupational Health and Safety, and Employability Skills and Employer Expectations. The first covers basic industrial safety requirements and good practices, and the second provides insight into business thinking and how businesses go about hiring employees. This includes several hours of employee awareness of what traits employers find desirable when hiring an employee.

Upon completion of the certificate the student will posses improved communication and team work skills, will be capable of discussing technical aspects of manufacturing processes, will be capable of self analyzing individual strengths as they compare to employer needs, and will have the ability to monitor personal weak areas and make improvements.

The six credit-hour Manufacturing Skills Certificate will be offered during the fall semester, Aug. 11 through Dec. 1 on Mondays and Tuesdays from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information or to enroll, call 800-711-6947 or 343-4600.
